OTAGO UNIVERSITY COUNCIL.

The monthly meeting of the council of the University of Olago was held yesterday afternoon, and attended by the Chancellor (Mr Justice Williams), the Vice-chancellor (Mr E. B. Cargill). Dr Shaud, Dr Bums, the Rev. A. Cameron, Professor Sale, Mr D. R. White, Mr J. Allen, M.H.R., and the Hon. W. H. Reynolds, M.L.C. FINANCE COMMITTEE'S KEPORT. The Finance Committee reported thit the bank credit balance at tho end of. October wos £227 9s lOd. Accounts amounting to £711 6s 5d had been passed for payment. Dr Black forwarded a list of the material required for the "cbemiciri labora'ory for next session, and the council were recommended to procure these things to tha amount of £74, which would exhaust the balance of the money applicable to that purpose. The reporfc i^as adopted. THE AGE OF ADMISSION. The Professorial Board forwarded the following resolution :—" That it is desirable that the minimum age for admission to the university bo 16 instead of 15 years." Professor Sale explained that in this resolution it was only proposed to adapt the regulations of the University of Otago to those of the New-Zealand University. The recommendation was adopted, Dr Bgjtvs (who stated that he had matriculated beforo he was 15 years of age, and it would have been awkward to bave been cast adrift for a year) dissenting from it. THE SELECTION OF PBOFESSOKS. Sir Maurice O'Rorko, chancellor of the Auokland University College, wrote asking for information as to the'method adopted in Great Britain iv the selection of professors for Otago University, and suggesting the appointment of | a board in England for the selection of all, professors for tne university colleges in New Zealand. The Registrar observed that the usual plan was to ask the Agent-general to act in concert with certain professors or gentlemen selected by the council for the special purpoio required. The Registrar was instructed to forward the I information sought. MISCELLANEOUS. . Mr. Edward Liveing, registrar of the Royal College of Physicians, London, forwarded a notification that the first award under'the loundation of the Weber Parke's prize and medals would be made iv 1897, and the adjud;----i cator had selected as. the subject of the essay for the occasion " The means prophylactic or curative deemed by the author to have valuo iv tho control of tuberculosis, special regard being bad to their application to human tuberculous.s' The essay must be based on original work aud observations (experimental or other) of the author, and must include a detailed J exposition of the methods employed and. their inodea of application. ,AU essays must be transmitted to the registrar'"of the colony on or beforo tho lst July 1897.
