Mr Charles Ziele,, managing director of M'Leod Bros.', appeared before the Tariff Commission a few days after he. had. given the evidence which was published yesterday :— The Chairman: I understand, Mr Ziele, that y<su desire to make some explanation concerning the'.cvidence you gave on a former occasion ? — Yes; I find that I made'some.mistakes iv that evidence. First, with regard to :.the number of hands employed; I find that J. overstated the number. The nverage number of employees, I p find, would be 70, and the total amount of wages , paid over £7000 per anuuuh The mistake I made j occurred through my omitting'amount .-paid, to j oflice and travelling staff There Was another I matter I was-wrong in. That was witH regard to 'he the duty on lightweight candles! I was under P j, the belief that these paid full duty, whereas I find br the tariff they pay at weight. c - n ■■■ Mr Glasgow :Ifit is a light weight, and has no s t, indication given of the proper weight on the.out- pc side package, then it is taken at the reputed £ wsizht. - Witness : I find they pay on the actual weight, cv but I think they should pay on the nominal ,n, weight, £J Mr Glasgow: Light weight candles that have to no indication of the weight on the outside j n package that 3uch candles are light weight puy r- a full weight duty. If the weight is on the outside ur . of the package the consumer sees that he is , ir ~, getting a 14oz package. Witness: _ Then, another matter I might mention. There was some application made to re , admit candle-makiag machinery free into New „}. Zealand. That would be manifestly unfair to 7 those engaged iv candle making wbo have paid f u duty on machinery. As a matter cf fact, I paid ar > duty on some about a month ago. Wo, have had _ y other difficulties to contend within establishing the industry, and to let others Mmc in and reap the benefit of our past labours, and be relieved in w the customs duties, would be heaping on the q ( injustice. ■ i wi — . —_ | jjjj THE HABIT OF HEALTH. ' be I i we think of soap as a means of cleanli-e-; - w' oni y even then Pears' Soap is a matter oi an course. It is the only soap that is ali Boap auV JJ nothing but soap—no free fat nor free alkali i; v,r d it. But- what does cleanliness lead fco ? Ifc lean pn to a wholesome body and mind; fco cletvn h thoughts ; to fche habit of health; to manly and womanly beauty. Pure Soap—Peabs' Soar-. i
