At the City Police Court to-day six informations will be heard, against two defendants (Henry Phillips and Nicholas Ungherer), charging them with unlawfully diverting water belonging to the waterworks, and doing an act whereby ttie sapply of water to them was improperly increased, and connecting a pips with the pipe belonging to the waterworks without the pssrmis&ion of the council.

Theweekly meeting of the Dunedin Cathoße Literary Society was held last evening. Thera was a fair attendance of .members. Mr T. M'Cormack, at the request of the president,*' occupied the chair. A paper on "Microbes" was read by Mr H. Miles; Mr F. W. Petra gave some interesting reminiscances; and Mi M. Coughlin contributed a humorous reading. The various items were criticised by Messrs Dobbin, F. W. Petre, J. Marlow,. and T. M'Cormack. A very interesting evening was spent, after which the usual vote of thanks brought the meeting to a close. About noon'yesterday a fivei-roomed woodea house situated in Princes steeet, Musselburgh, was destroyed by fire. The owner,, Mrs B. Hurrell, was alone in the placer '-. and was engaged cooking. She went outside, and, on returning, found the place on fire. As there is no' water supply in the locality the. flames spread unchecked, and soon, despite the efforts of the South Dunedin Fire Brigadej nothing remained of the house and contents bufc a smouldesing mass. The honse was insured for, £210 and the furniture for £120, but in what office is unknown. *

. A most successful social was held lasfc Fridaj evening in the Caversham Hall under the auspices of the local fire brigade. About 70 couples were present. Songs were contributed during the evening by Captain Sharp, Lieutenanc Bryant, Firemen Randell and Scofield, and a step dance was given by Fireman Hannigan. The duties of M.C. were carried oat by Lieutenants'Bryant and Gubbins, and Firemen Yates and Hill, and the music, supplied : by Messrs Paterson and Mantell, thoroughly satisfied everyone. '--■'-

The Taieri Advocate states that the Anglican Church at Outram is entirely free from debt. The Moagiel church, where they had not a blade ef grass to call their own about three years ago, needs bat £25 more, over and above what is at command, to free entirely from debt that building with grounds which cost in all nearly £270; wbile at Greytown a good site his been secured through, the generosity of a Mosgiel gentleman, and there is now ia secure view about £110 cash towards the erection of a. church there, besides abtanfc £30 more promised on the list.

At the Walker street Penny Readings, on Monday evening, the Caversham Presbyterian Church Literary Society provided a very enjoyable entertainment. Mr Stephenson occupied the chair, and in a • few happy remarks introduced the Miss M'Chesnay gave the first item, " The banks of Loch Lomond," and Miss Dutton followed with a recitation "The Bishop and the Caterpillar." Mis» Mundie contributed a solo, "tVe'd Better bide a-wee," and then Mr Stephenson gave a recitation. Miss Palmer sang "Apart," Miss Reid "Riding on a load of hay," Mr E. S Jones "The tar's farewell," Mis« J. Reid " The blue Alsatian mountains," and Mr G M'Laren " Happy moments." A duet, " Broken spells " was rendered by Miss Reid and Miss J Reid Another recitation was contributed by Mr Stephenson, and the songs '< The Scottish blue bells- and "Coming thro' the rye" by Hiss M'Chesney. A dialogue entitled "Th° "Rutin* Shot," in which the characters were sustained by Messrs G. M'Laren, J. Brown, E. S. Jones, and D. Jones, brought the entertainment toi close. Misses Aitken and Dow played the accompaniments. Every item was well rendered, and the large audience was entirely satisfied
