F*eßß Association—By'Telegraph—Copyright. Rome, July 21. . As a result of a collision between two Italian steamsrs in the Gulf ;'of Spezzia 148 people were drowned. ;:•:
The steamers that came into collision wera the Ortiga and Maria, and the accident happened at the entrance to the gulf. The Maria sank instantly, and 14S passengers ont of 178 were drowned.
July 22. The Maria was bound from Naples to Genoa, and was earryieg immigrants to the River. Plate. The collision occurred- at 1 o'clock in the morniDg. The lookout on boardthe O'rtiga did not see the other vessel until it was impossible to avoid an accident. The force of the impact was terrific, the stem of the Ortiga being driven ISct into the siarboard quarter of the Maria. The majority :of .those on board were asleep at the time, and as tbs vessel sank in three minutes there was no chanca of escape. Tho Ortiga'sbows were. badly stove in."
