SHOOTING A BAILIFF.

SERIOUSLY WOUNDED.

ARRESTOF A FARMER;

(Pi.c : United* Press Association;)

iNVEECAnoir,!, July 81,

Yesterday afternoon two bailiffs, named Middlemi-s. and; Hugh Stewart, of Gore, proceediug to execute a warrant on -the'farm of John Keown, Balfour, were ordered to stop by Keown when about two chains from the house. As they continued to advance Keown Bred, and the charge of Rhot struck Stewart about his head. The man- rolled off his horse in the yard. Middlemiss does not seem to have done anything for hi 3 companion, but galloped to Riversdale, some distance away, to apprise tho police at-Gore and other stations, althoup,h there is a tulepboue to Balfour. Middlemiss said Stewart was dead, but the latest information is to the effect that this is not so, although the man lay iv the yard and afterwards in the shed for some time oa a very frosty might. He must be badly hurt; as he was unable to move from where he fell till two-men carried him into a shed. Middlemiss eaya Keown fired at him the day beforo. Constable H»-rlihy, from Waikaia, was the first to reach Keown's house. He found him in bed, aud told him he was a constable, to which Keown responded that he supposed he had come to arvest him for shooting the mau outside.

Keown is a middle-aged man with a family, ami is said to bavo been drinking lately. A doctor has gone from Gore and probably' one from LumsJen to attend Stewart, but the Balfonr telephone -annot-be got to-day, and tbe extent of the injuries is therefore unknown here.

Inspector Pardy, ou Saturday and yesterflfty, reoeived fctlegrams cutdi-inii-g the account given above but without conveying much further information. From him we learn thab Stewart and Middlemiss wore proceeding to Keowu's pkee to seize some horsas. After SteWatt was shot by Keowu, Middlemiss galloped away and information' wai given to the police. Ssrutaiit Fleming, with Constables Ferguson and M'Keu*"' sic, proceeded respectively from 'Gore and Lnmsdeu to Balfour. Constable ■ Herlihy, of Waikaia, appears, however, to have reached Kcowu's plane first. This Was some time about I o'clock on Sunday morning. He at once arresi-.d Known, who offered uo resistance. .Constables Herlihy and Ferguson were attending fco Stewart until the arrival of a medical man. Unfortunately the information given by Middlemiss was to the eiTfict that Sfcawai't was dead,; otherwise medical assistance could baVe reached the injured man late ou Saturday night. Inspector Pardy leaves for Lumsden tbi- morning, where Keown will probably be brought up before two local J.P 's.
