THE AUCKLAND ELECTION.
(Froji Our Own Correspondent.)
. Auckland, July 20. With regard to. Iha-.eleclipu, tho feeling amongst the rank aud file cf the Labour party at the forced retirement of tbeir candidate is still very strong, and the discontent felt is not lessenad by the steady refusal of those who were instrumoutal in bringing Messrs Fawcus and Napier together afc a midnight conference to divulge auy of the reasons wbich led to tha hnal withdrawal of the labour candidate. They resent beiug told to have faith and only believe, wheu_ so rtc.ntly evftrjoiio appeared to be charging everyone else with treachery, trickery, and deceit. This resentment made itself felt at the clo-iing.meeti-jg.of Mr B'awcus's supporters, when it was.decined to hand baok subscriptions to those who had .given to the labour electoral fund. It was su K[ *es.ed that the £5 donated by the Trades and Labour Council should remain with this fund, but members would not agree to it. Tho meeting was given to uuderstaud that all expanses'ih-ideintai to the. contest had been paid, but when the source of the supply was pressed for again there was silence. Anger, too, was expressed at the 'committeemen binding themselves to secrecy iv such- a vital matter.
