LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL.
THURSDAY, JULY ?-. The Council met at 2.30 p.m. - • PETITIONS, ETC. The Hon. Mr JENNINGS presented two petitions from Auckland and six from Poverty Bay, signed by men and women, praying the Couucil. to amend the marriage laws, and also praying that women may be permitted to have seats iv Parliament. The Joint Statutes Revision Committee recommended that the Sale cf Foods Bill be allowed to proceed. THE CURRENCY QUESTION. The Hon. Mr KELLY resumed the interrupted debate upon Mr Rigg's motion for a committee to inquire into the currency question, and also to inquire into the advantages or otherwise of a State bank of issue and deposit, &c. Mr Kelly supported the motion, and in doing so said he was in favour cf a limited paper issue by the State. The Hon. Mr BOLT was in favour of a State bank, but with regard to the question of bimetallism he considered any debate must prove futile. The Hon. Mr MONTGOMERY opposed the motion for a* committee because the questions involved would take up more time than the remainder of the session, and even th.en no,good could come of it. Had the motion merely dealt with the questiou o£ a State bank he would have* supported it! The Hon. Mir JENNINGS, considering ths order proposed by Mr Uigg was too large a one, wouid, though with reluctance, vote against the motioa. He desired, however, to say that if the motion was confined to the question of a State bank of issue he would have supported it The Hod. Dr GRACE would vote against the motion. The Hon. J. RIGG having replied, The Council divided and the motion was lost by 16 to 10. - . . ■ BIIXS PASSED. The Hon. Sir P. BUCKLEY moved the third' reading of the Animals' Protection Act Amendment Bill. .The Hon. Dr POLLEN hoped the bill would be'recommitted with a view to its being amended. ■ He was opposed to the bill altogether as he believed it to be highly mischievous in character. The bill passed its final stages. < The Uniforms Bill and Dog Registration Acb 'Amendment Bill were committed, reported without amendment, read a third time, and pasted. SAM! OF BREAD. The Hon. Sir P. BUCKLEY moved the oecond reading of the Adulteration Prevention Acts Amendment Bill.—Agreed to. The Council then adjourned.
