THE CURRENCY QUeSTION. TO THE EDITOR.

Sra,—Like cur townspeople, Messrs Braithwaite and Mallard, 1 was utterly opposed to the^great question of bimetallism, which has been agitating the minds of a very large namber throughout the werld, but I have come to see by your leading articles and other writers there is a great deal in it, and, as you ttcd obhera have pointed out. the commerce of the world must and has suffered by the non-adop-tion of it. Anything that tends to lower our prices, is bound to affect the working class, end I believe now that thie question of gold and silver has as much, if not more, to do with the low price of wages than the question of labour v...capital, because, as you very ably stated, that if we only get a third now of what wa used to do for our products'sent Home, it must naturally fall upon the worker, in whatever sphere he is occupied, and we ate all workers in this part of the globe.—l am, &c -May 14./ . . MR GARNETT AND BIMETALLISM; TO THE EDITOR. Sic,-—One can always distinguish between* newspaper that favours bimetallism and one that; takes up' the monometallic theory. The former is never afraid to publish opinions from the other side, while the latter, and I refer more particularly to the London press, does its utmost to baulk discussion. The reason for this difference no doubt is that the bimetallic paper seeks the truth, and wishes to naske it public, ' while the gold monometallic, press knows • the truth, but it. does not pay those who pay.the pipers that it should be made known. The Otago Daily Times has earned the everlasting respect and thanks of all : those of its readers who take an* interest in the currency question for its freedom and open-ajindedcess, for I am sure nobody can accuse it of giving either Bide a preference. Local bimetallists would be sorry if it did, because, in the absence of adverse criticism, they would be without fighting material wherewith to kill the enemy. There is, no easier, way to .prove bimetallism correct than by replying td monometallic arguments. Therefore we welcome "Kalaydos" and his extracts from BTrGamett's letter, and I will do my hast, at the request of s few friends, to show what an Aunt Sally Mr Garnett has made of himself. As my reply will be rather lengthy, kindly publish this part of the letter first.—l am, &c, . Dunedin, May 13. Aethub M'Donald.
