The Natives at To Whaici threatened to tie up the Native guide of Mr Phillips, surveyor, if be persisted in proceeding with the latter to show tho country or trig stations. Inspector Emerson wired to the Defence Minister re the I position ot affairs. The co-operative' works are being pushed on,.Mr L. Best having charge of a gang. The officer in command of the Permanent Artillery at the North Shore received orders to-day from the Defence minister instructing ! him to hold men in readiness to again proceed : to Uriwer?. at short notice if necessary. It is I ; believed this is in consequence of the action of j \ some Natives at Te Whaiti with reference to ! Mr Phillips's party. j
