SCHOOL COMMITTEES.

i The ordinary meeting of the Arthur street bchool Committee, held last evening, was attended !by Messrs G. Simpson (chairman), Crawford, Macjtay, Burt, Mason, M'Gregor, Strutbers, and the Rev. Mr Harrison. The head master reported tbat the average daily attendance during the month was—Boys, 2SB; girls, 252 -— total, 533. The number at present on the roll is—Boys, 318; girls. 275 ;-total, 593. The average daily absentees (55) seemed laree in proportion "to the number on the roll, but although no effort was spared to secure the regular attendance of the scholars, it was futile to try to convince some of the parents of the intimate connection between regular attendance and satisfactory progress. The head master also made reference to a conversa- j tien he had with the chairman and the Rev. Mr Harrison on the subject of the establishment of a kindergarten m connection with the school, and added that he would be glad to do all he could to forward the project, provided the committee were satisfied as to the desirability of trenching on private enterprise in that direction. He was well satisfied that an institution of the sort wonld be a valuable adjunct to the school, for he was continually having to refuse admission to children under age The report was adopted, and Messrs Mackay, Mason, Simpson, and the Rev. Mr Harrison were appointed a subcommittee to report on tbe matter of the kindergarten. Messrs Harrison and Mason were appointed Alsitin{* Committee, and Messrs Mackay and Sligo delegates to the School Committees' Conference Accounts amounting to .£l4 7 3 6d were passed for payment. The regular monthly meeting of the George street School Committee was held last night, and was attended by Messrs C. Haynes (chairman), R. Coghill, S. Thompson, R. C. Moore, A. Black, J. AY. Jago, C. Carter, aud W. P. Browne An apology was received from Mr A. Thomson for non-attendance. The head master reported that the number on the roll of the school was 818 the average attendance being 735. The delegates appointed to attend the meeting re openinc a night school reported on what had been done, and the sum of £3 was voted for incidental expenses. Ine secretary was instructed to write to the Education Board concerning necessary repairs to the schcolhouse. Messrs A. Black and C. Carter wore appointed delegates to attend the School Committees Conference. Accounts amounting to £3 5s were passed f.x payment,
