DRINK BILLS.

Walker, of the New Zealand Alliance, haa supplied the New Zealand Herald with the following drink bill of New Zealand, which he has just computed for the year 1894, from customs and excise returns, and compared with the drink bill for fche previous year. It 13 necessarily based on the assumption thafc the consumers always received pure liquor and full measure :—

The estimated population, including Maoris, in 1894, was 723,121, and the cost of liquor per head of population, including Maoris, in 1894, was £2 17s Bd, as against £3 ls 6d in the previous year, when the estimated population, including Maoris, was 714,258.

At the annual meeting of the Otago University Students' Association, the report of the Executive Committee stated that the " Review " and the Debating Society were in a particularly thriving condition. The debt on fche " Review" had been reduced from £32 to £11, mainly by the efforts oE Mr M'Nickle. The balance sheet showed a credit in hand of I £11 3s 3d. The following office-bearers were elected:—President. Mr H. C. Cutten ; viceI presidents, Messrs F. Campbell and L. A. Line; I auditors, Messrs Mouat and Baldwin. Ifc was j decided thafc fche date of the annual meeting be j changed from the seoond Friday in May to nofc j later than the third Friday in April. A motion | to abolish the annual university ball was lost is- by a large majority.
