MINING.
UPPER TAIERI MINING NOTES.
Our Upper Taieri correspondent writes:—-"A band of practical miners from L>rybread diggings arrived here last week on prospecting bent. The scene of operations ia Canadians, in the locality of the Taieri Gorge. In the earlier days of the diggings Canadians supported a large mining population, and several rich patches of gold were unearthed. During the past few years the Celestials have been masters of the field, and, judging from the extensive operations that are being carried on in that locality, I should say that the Mongolians are making good wages. It has long been nu established theory that a lead of gold at n deep level has run into a small flat below the diggings, but owing to the quantity of water met with a practical test_ to solve this question has never been accomplished by Europeau miners, despite the fact that several have tried every elfcrt from time to time to do so. Messrs Ilinchcliffe and party are now hard at work on the flat sinking a large Bhaft for the purpose of testing its ainiforous reeonrces, and every effort v.-ill ba made by tho party to bottom the shaft before lcavingthe district for their home 3at Drybread."
