THE UNEMPLOYED.

Napier, March 12.

At the Charitable Aid Board meeting yester? day reference was made to the urgent necessity of erecting a new home for the aged poor and needy ontside the town, the Government having given a definite promise of assistance foi the purpose. The Hon. Mr Ormond said the ensuing winter wa3 likely to be a .severe one, and the board would have to make provision to meet calls upon the funds. He suggested, with a view to assisting the Government in providing for distressed families, that application be made for a block of land, upon which deserving applicants be placed. A large floating population was toamicg over the country at the present time, which the stationholdera were called upon to support. To meet the difficulty he proposed that depots be established at the different centres, where relief could he given. Another member pointed out that some stationholders had supplied as many as 1000 or 1500 men with food, the instincts of hospitality being such that they could not turn the men empty away. The chairman in his estimates provided for as increased rate, but tho board went furthec and doubled tho levy of last year. A committee of the bosird was also aaked to provide quarry work where possible, snd on the motion of the Hon. J. D. Ormond the following resolution was pasted :—" That; in view of the probable «snfc of employment its the district during the ensuing winter, the chairman com» municate with the Government and ascertain, whether the Government Trail" set asiilie two or three blocks of Hnd ia the most snitabla places open—(l) For settlers' families, &c.; (2) for providing employment in bush-Jelling or other improvement of Crown lands ; (3) and to what eztent in money will the Government provide funds for such settlers ? That the committee further report to the next meeting1 whether quarries can be opeaed in the different Hawke's Bay counties in which work can be provided for single men and others applying for assistance."
