SABBATH OBSERVANCE.

TO THE EDITOR. Sic, —The letter on Sabbath observance, by "Leotor," in your issue of Tuesday 19th inst,, closes by saying: "Thus through the theologian radiates the gentleman." Let us hope " Lector" is both. Evidently he is not a Sabbatarian. I have been trying to make out what he really is—perhaps a Seventh Day Adventisfr, or one who, with itching ears, has been listening to the loud nothings of our latest Freethought man, or a Christ&in seeking light. If the latter, no doubt many of our Sabbatarians could, if they would, and I hope they will, give us light on this subject. The British Israelites say the Sabbath was always to be si sign between the children of Israel and God, and because we keep the Sabbath by law and observance, therefore we must be part of the children of Israel. Perhaps so; but the great point that comes to my mind whenever I read the Fourth Commandment is that it says "Remember the Sabbath day [or 'seventh'] 3ay to keep it holy." Ii does not say the "seventh d&y of the week," bat the "seventh 3ay." Christ said not one jot or tittle should paaa from the law, evidently meaning the ren Commandments and not the ceremonial law. Therefore, if the English law says 1 must aot do my ordinary work gu the Sabbath or Sunday or the first day of out modern week I refrain from doing that ■work, because it is right and profitable to do so, for the English law does not clash, but harmonises, with the command of God to keep holy the "seventh Jay." For if the week is divided into seven 3ays the return of any o£ those days is a seventh day.—l am, &c, February 20.
