Three Unionists and two Liberals were absent from tho division on Mr Chamberlain's amendment on account, of illness, and were not able to record their votes.
The election for the return of a member to represent Colchester in the House of Commons in placs of Captain Naylor-Leyland (resigned) took place to-day, when Sir William Poaraon (Liboral) defeated the Unionist candidate, Mr Vcreker, by a majority of 2G3 votes.

In the House o£ Commons, Mr Bryce (President of the Board of Trade), referring co the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, said tho department of which he was head neither claimed nor exercised any control over the reports of the official receivers.
In reply to a question, Mr Buxton (Parliamentary Seorstary to the Colonial Office) said the Traosvaal was responsible for the peace of Swaziland, as England had been precluded from declaring a protectorate over the country.
In order to avert a defeat on the question the Government accepted Mr Howard Vincent's motion affirming the desirableness of restricting the import of goods manufactured in foreign prisons.
