ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.

Auckland, January 25.

Intelligence has been received that a yoang man, named Kilchenor, 25 years of age, accountant in the branch of the National Bank at T&uraDga, which was on the point of doling permanently, shot himself through the head iv the bank about 2 30 p.m. He had just returned from lunch, and a clerk, hearing a shot of a revolver in the manager's room, ran in and found Kitchener lyiug in a pool of blood, with a revolver at his hand. A doctor probed the bullet in his bend, but it is still unextraoted. There is no suspicion of financial difficulties. The doctor! have some hope of Kitchener's recovery. He had been in delicate health, but appaared better since his removal to Tauranga. Great sympathy is felt for Mrs Kitchener, his mother, whose grief is great. She lost her husband and two children in a fire in Dunedin.

A shocking bathing fatality took place yesterday evening ou the west ooaat, opposite Aratapu, Missus Evelyn Hogg, Bessie Scott, and Annie Woollams beiDg drownud. Their ages were about 16. From tha particulars to hand it appear* that a luge number of Wniroa, residents were camped on the coast holidaymakiog. A lagoon in whicfa 16 of the number were bu.tb.iog beoame like a whirlpool when the tide rushed in, and the wash from the breakers aasisted to carry the swimmers seaward. Mr Guerring, the schoolmaster at Aratapu, assisted several ashore. A large number of people standing on the beach witnessed the accident and were powerless to help the unfortunate people owing to their inability to swim. The body of Miss Bessie Scott was secured quickly, but all efforts to effmt restoration of life proved unavailing. Miss Evelyn Hogg was a visitor to the district and belonged to Newmarket. Her body was found half a mite further along. Hi«B Annie Woollarae's body has not yet been recovered. Mrs Hopu and Florrie Jones had a narrow escape from sharing a similar f»te. Much sympathy is felt throughout the district. The fUgs of all the vessels an 4of the public buildings are half-mast. Miss E. Hogg was one of the younger daughter! of Mr W. Hogg, grocer, Newmarket. Sne was on a visit to her aunt, living at Aratapu, and w&» accompanied by her mother. The same morniug the little daughter of Mr Hector Alcock, of Aratapu, was drowned through falling off the K»uri Company's boom. WELLIN3TON, January 25. Miss Fudham, who fell off the train at JohaBonville on the 22ud inst., has recovered consciousness.

Two of Southland's oldest identities died yesterday—viz ,Mr Lachlan Gray, of Wallacetown, and Mr Johu Russell, of Waikiwi. Mr Russell for many yeara took a prominent part ih matters psrtaiuing to the Southland A. and V. Society. His services were always in demand as a jud^e of draught stock at all the leading agricultural shows in this island, and he has at different times owned and imported many _ef the best Clydesdale horses that have come into the district.

Mr John Page, a well-known resident of Mornington, died suddenly on Thursday evening at 8 o'clock. He lived by hinnelf for many years pant, and about the hour indicated Mr Joseph Allan, who was cutting grass naar at hand, saw him through an open window breathing heavily, and a few minutes afterwards expire. An inquest was held yesterday afteraoon, when Dr Teevan deposed that death was probably due to heart disease. Deceased wna 73 years of age. A verdict of "Death from natural causes" was returned.

The body of Thomas Bawaaan, who was drowsed from the dredge, on the 13th inst., in the Clutha river, has been recovered below the Tuapeka Mouth.
