SOUTH CANTERBURY CHARITABLE AID BOARD.

The commission set: up. to report upon certain alleged irregularities of the Charitable Aid Board of South Canterbury find:—(l) That there is no justification for the feharge of cruelty by the officers in refusing assistance in deserving cases. (2) As to the alleged extravagance of the board in the scale of salaries paid to its offioers, the commission Bud that the salaries of the secretary, book-keeper, and clerk are not excessive, but that of th« present inspector is, and that the services of. one clerk might be dispensed with. As to the charge of dealing with old sick and improvident people, the commissieners state there is justification for this complaint only in regard to the permanent dole issued. (4) As to the alleged conduct of the: inspector of the board in acting immorally to some of tho*e who ask for or are in receipt of aid, the commissioners report they fiad this is not proven. '
