The Pesjn officials are regaining confidence, owing ts the suffering of the Japanese in Manchuria through the severity of the winter, and there has been a deal of sickness In their array from the want of supplies.

The departure of the Chinese envoys to Tokio to negotiate for peace has been delayed In consequence.

Twelve thousand Chinese attacked the Japanese in the vicinity of Nenchang. The excellent firing of the Japanese artillery threw the Chinese into confusion, and, following up their success with a great charge, the Japanese produced a complete rout. The Chinese lost 900 and the Japanese from 400 to 500.

The Japanese vessels have landed a force at Yangtcheng on the Shangang promontory, and it is now within 30 miles o£ Weihaiwei.

The British, American, German, and French bluejackets have been landed at Chefoo from their respective war vessels, in order to protect the consulate. This step 1b taken as a precautionary measure. January 25.

The Japanese occupied Minghai, between Chefoo and Weibaiwei, without opposition.

The Japanese effected a landing at Minchtrang under cover of a snowstorm. The whole of - the Chinese northern fleet is entrapped in Weihaiwei, bnt the Chinese 3echue the garrison is able to withstand a (prolonged attack.

The Japanese warships bombarded and captured Tungchew-Foo, a fortified city 40 miles from Chefoo.

Weihaiwei is now invested by land and yea, and Japanese cavalry are scouting the toads south of the arsenal.
