The Hawke's Bay Eabbit Board has a credit balance of £935. Miss Myra Kemble, the actress, is much im« proved in health by her visit to the old country. The Hawke's Bay Herald learns that the marriage of Colonel Fox and Miss Cora Russell will take place on the 6th February. It is reported that a Maori lad has died at) Homebush, Wairarstpa, through bathing iinme< diately after eating a hearty meal. It is notified in the Gazette that on and after the Ist May next the rate of interest payable to depositors in the Dunedin Savings Bank will be reduced to 4 per cent. Mr J. M'Lachlan, M.H.E., addressing hia constituents at Ashburton the other night, declared that he coneidered Mr J. G. Ward a wizard. It was he who brought Southland from a state ot sin aad misery to a state e£ grace. : The following tendera have been received for the Tapaaui Post Office contract: —Accepted: Sparrow and Co., Dunedin, £293. Declined :J. Drake, Gore, £297; G. France, Dunedin, £300; A. T. Anderson, Dunedin, £313 ; T. Crawford, Tapanui, £314; W. Basket, St. Clair, £330; J. Ford and Co., Ducedin, £264-. We are informed that three of the competitors for the Education Board junior scholar' ships—Margaret A. Aitken, Major George Irnin, and George Edward Breeze—attended the Waiwera township school, but were wrongly credited to other schools. The first-named is the winner of a scholarship, the second has entitled himself to two years' free education ia the High School, and the third did creditably. The half-yearly meeting of the Lindsn Lofiga, 1.0.0.E1,, was held in the Oddfellows' Hall, Koalyn, Bro. Jame3 Pattison, N.G., pcesiditg. The occasion being the fitsfc regular meeting of the lodge in tha new hall, the members railed up in force, with the result that it was tha largest meeting of Oddfellows ever hold in the district. Visitors wore also preseflt from the Pioneer (Sauthland), Alfred (Oamaru), Star (Canterbury), Pioneer, Leith, and Unity (Dunedin) Lodges. Two can> didatos were initiated during tie evening and two more proposed for membership. Bro. Alexander, G.T., installed the officers for tba ensuing term as foliow3: —P.G., Bro. J. L. Wilton; N.G., Bro. James Pattison; V.G., Bro. Walter Smith; secretary, Bro. James T. Hijgins; treasurer, Bro. Alex. Clapperton; conductor, Bro. Jas, Shannon; R. aad L.B. to N.G., Bros. Green and G. Martin ;.R. and L.S. to V.G., 3ros. T. Wilkinson and Brickell; K. and L.S.S., Bros. Broadloy and Smart; I. and 0.G., Bros. A. Washer and Beveridge. The Secretary reported that the lodge had increased their membership during the year by 26, while close on £100 had been added to the funds. Bro. Alexander congratulated the lodge on their position both numerically and financially, and also on tha excellent manner in which the business was conducted. The N.G. announced that Sister Salmon, of Oregon (U.S.A.), being at present on a visit to Dunedin, had consented to address a meeting on the principles and working of tha Eebeccah branch of the order. Votes of thanks were accorded ta the visitors, and in response several of them congratulated the lodge on then: new lodge room as boing one of the most handsome and best appointed in New Zealand. Tha receipts of the evening were £29 10s sd.
