THE WOOL SALES.

Messrs Weight, Stethenson, and Co. report as follows: —The second series of sales commenced on Thursday, 10th January, when there was a capital muster of buyers and, on the whole, good competition. Indeed, in the case of all bright, deep-grown wool—three-quarter and seven-eighth bred Lincolns, Leicesters, and Romneys for instance—the demand was very keen, and prices for these descriptions were from id to id per lb better thau at the opening sales of the season; but, on the other hand, bidding for off-colour and wasty crossbreda and halfbreds was slack, and values from Id to Id per lb easier. Ordinary merino wool brought, if anything, a fraction mora than at last'sale, and values of pieces were practically unchanged. The total quantity of wool offered at tha present series is 10,159 bales, ou* contribution to the total being 3020 bales, and of this number we sold 2482 bales under the hammer, and as the bidding for some of the passed-in lots is very close tip to the reserves it is not irdprobabla that a good many of these will be disposed of privately. The highest price paid this season fo< crossbred wool—viz., 8|d —was given for^ Mr John Reid's Kaiwera Downs clip, and for merinos Messrs Johnston Bros., of Kaihiku arid Waikaka, topped the market at 71d. A few of the other; brands that realised the highest prices in tha respective classes are :—Halfbred: JO, 10 bales ewe and hogget at Sd; BB over Anchor, 29 first combing wether at Bd, 9 at 7Jd; EB over W, 4 ewe at 7Jd. Crossbred: JS over Drumoak, 3 ewe and hogget at 7-Jd; 7(5, 4 ewe at 7|d; EC, 12 do at 71d; Waicola over O, 26 first combing ewe 73d, 30 crossbred at 7id; <-> over C, 4 ewe and wether at 7Jd; J+, 2 do and hogget at 7id; 76, 8 hogget at 7Jd; JO, 3 ewe and hogget at 7Jd; Horseshoe, 24 do, wether, and hogget at 7Jd; Beomore over O, 68 first combing wether at 7Jd; RB over W, 5 crosabred ewe at 7ja. Messrs Donald Reid and Co. report a3 fdi' lows:—We held the second sale of this seasou'a series at the Oddfellows' Hall, Rattray streat, Dnnedin, on Thursday, January 10, when we had a large attendance ol English, colonial, and local buyers; there was also a good attendance of woolgrowers and farmers interested in the sales. Bidding throughout the sale was brisk and satisfactory tip to valuation limits, and for sound long-stapled bright wools was rather more animated than at "our. opening sale, and for .thia class of wools a Bligrj, tly better record was secured; nevertheless the saje was, on the whole, a rather disappointing one. Medium and low-class dingy, earthy, and inferior wools of all sorts evoked but little competition, and prices for these showed no improvement, and in some cases wero not equal to those obtained ijt our opening sale. Merino wools also were not in favour, and were saleable only at very low piices. Some 10,000 bales were submitted by the Various brokers, the bulk of which were placed at market rates. Our catalogue, which comprised 1500 bales, was made up almost entirely of farmers'clips, the bulk of ouc catalogue being fully up to the average in quality, and although there was nothing very exceptional, it contained some very nice wools, which deserved a better market. Of the 1500 bales catalogued by ua, 1398 were sold at auction, 102 being passed pending further instructions from the vendors. The following table will show prices current for various classes :—
