SERVICE OF SONG AT PORT CHALMERS.

A service of song, entitled "Only a Gipsy," adapted by A. J. Foswell and J. Graham from the story of that name, was given in the Foresters1 Hall, Port Chahners, yesterday evening, under the auspices of the Congregational ChurcH and in the presence of a, very numerous audience. In addition 10 adult choirs, fully 100 children took part, and an excellent orchestra rendered go»d assistance. Too much praise cannot be accorded Bliss Bl'Kinley, ihe conductress, for the excellent mauner in which she carried out her duties. Tie connective readings were given by the Rev. Mr Fisher, and both vocalists and instrumentalists were he&rd t« considerable advantage. 'iho orchestra played four selections, and the clear voices of the children as they saag the concerted pieces and choruses blended very sweetly. They were specially succeseful in the numbers, "Hark my soul," " God make my life a little light," and "Jesus loves me." Miss Ellen .Facer cans '"there is a green hill" very prettily. The duet "No more tears " was well rendered by the Misses Neat and Johnsos, and the trio "Father, lead me" was nicely Bung by the Misses F. Weir, A. HaiuiLi. and F. Powell. The bass solo "Seek ye thu Lord" by Mr G. L. Aahcr was excellently rendered, the adult choir giving the chorun in good style. Miss If. Bell gave as a recitation "There is a green hill," and Miss M. Weir, M. Farimhavson, iind Master G. Neal samg the trie " God make my life" very acceptably. The duet "Jesus is calling," by Misses G. Bauchop and J. Weir, was a good piece of vocalisation, and equally good was the duet "Rest, weary pilgrims" by Mrs Powell and Miss Ball. The Key. Dr Faber'a hymn " O Paradise" brought the first part of the entertainment to a close. Afterwards a floral service, iv which all the children took part, wa< given and proved very successful. Miss Milles acted as accompanist during the service.
