SUICIDE AND ATTEMPTED SUICIDES.

» '■■ (Pas United Pkess Association) Westfort, October 29. , A woman named Hareus attempted to commit suicide this evening by throwing herself into the rivar. She was rescaed by a man named Wheatley. ■ A pitiable case of suicide occnrred in Oamaru yesterday morning, when an old lady nampd Mrs George Falconer, widow of the late Mr George Falconer, of Ngapara, took her life by banging herself on the verandah of Mr Hewali's, Reed street. Mrs Falconer (says the O&marti Mail) was 67 years of age, and had been staying for gome time with Mrs Irons, » married daughter, who resided in Wellington. The latter having removed to Napier, tho old lady came down to Oavnaru about seven days ago to stay with Mr .and Mrs Hewat, the latter of whom is her sister-in-law. She was somewhat despondent at having to leave htsr' daughter; but it was never suspected, nor did she give any intimation, that "he meditated taking her life. She was noticed about 6 o'clock on the verandah by Misa Phelonng. Subsequently, this yonng lady, noticing that Mrs Falconer had not moved for nearly an hour, drew her parents'attention to the fact, aud it was discovered that tho old lady had hung herself from the framework of the veraudah, having taken the cord from her box to commit the deed. Dc deljautour was hastily nvmimoned, but pronounced life to have been extinct for some hours. At the inque&t the jury returned a verdict that deceased had hanged herself whils in a state or unsound mind.

A labourer named Edward Scofcfc, residing at Kaiapoi, attempted to commit suicide on Sunday by cuttiug his throat. He inflicted a severe wound cutting into the trachea. He was romoved to the Christehuroh hospital, where he lies in a precarioua condition, greatly exhausted by the loss of blood. Ho is/an old man 62 years of age, and has been in bad health for several years. A few months ago he was treated ia the hospital for frostbite o£ the toes.
