AGRICULTURAL STATISTICS.

The agricultural statistics for the Peninsula, Taieri, aud part of Waikouaiti have been supplied us by Mr T. R. Dodds, and from these we tako the foUowing particulars:—

_ Thera are 21,187 horned cattle in tho district, including 8150 breeding cows. The quantity of last year's crop on hand is as follows:—Wheat 15,051 bushels, oats 1000 bushels, barley 10S bushels. Sun EjiCMEBATons' Notes. 'The following notes wero received from the diff'-ronfc sub-enumerators:— Blueskin Ridino — Grain aud heavy crops were laid aad twisted more than usual, owing to very unsettled weather. Potatoes soein to be a failure. The Californian thistle is becoming a pest of considerable magnitude. Roslyn and Kaikoiui. - Crops later than usual, and. potatoes hive suffered owing to excessive rain. Easy and North Taikiu Ridings.—No complaints in regard to caterpillars, but the Hessian fly remains about the same a.i of late yfars—ono farmer having a third of a parcel of wheat injured. Maungatua Disniicr.—The damage dona by tho Hessiau fly represented 1000 bushels; but there were more cooiplainti tbis year than former | years, owing to tbe wet weather. The crop 3 were laid by high winds and rain. Oats, which at first were thought would yield from I'O to 80 bushels an acre, are vow estimated at only 30. The same remarks applied to wheat and barley cropi. One farmer, who has been iv the colony for 30 yoars, says it is tho worst harvcit he his seen in New Zealand. STiIATII-TAIEIU and Deep Stukam. — Small settlement has gone on apace in these districts. ! Many of the returns in the Strath-Taieri district are small owing to winds and floods, fully 31 per cent of the cropi in that district having beon wasted through these causes. There wero no traces of the Hessian fly or other pests. Ot»kaia Riding.—Damage was done to root crop.l by grubs, and the grain crops wero bo laid and broken that they had to be cut one way. Small birds are a great pest, some crops being destroyed by them. If something is not soon done to destroy them, many small farmers will have to cease growing grain. The Taieri County Council does not now provide poisoned grain for farmers.
