SATURDAY'S MATCHES. RUGBY.

The Alhambra Club held a very satisfactory practice match at Opoho, although thoy could have done with a few more players. Sides were chosen by Messrs Hobson and Higgins, and after a very fast game victory rested with tho latter's team by 32 points to 22.

Tries were obtained by W. Elder (3), Fitchetl

(3), Higgins, Restieaux, Withers, Briggs, M'Allister, and M'Kewen, while goals were kicked by W. Elder (■*■), Fitchett (2), Restieaux (2), Higgins, and Withers. The play wa3 a great improvement on that of the previous Saturday. Some very good passing was shown by some of the young players, the most noticeable being Driver, M'Kewen, Higgins, Hobson, and M'Allister. Of the backs, Smythe was greatly fancied at wing three-quarter, while W. Elder, in the centre, played most unselfishly. Fitchett also was in good form and played a rattling game throughout. Pollock, a young player, at half-back, surprised everybody by his smart work behind the scrum, and played into Restieanx's hands nicely.

There was a good muster of players at the Union Club's practice match, when a Probable Fifteen were opposed by 20 from ths rest of tbe club. Tho game was unusually fast, and terminated in favour of the Probables by 31 points to 13. The winners' backs showed more combination than heretofore, and indulged in some good passing runs, while the forwards also effected several passing rushes. M'Lennan, Munro, and Beck did some good place kicking.

The Caversham played a practice match at Bt. Clair, Captain v. Deputy-captain, which resulted in a win for the latter by 10 points to 3. Some good play was shown on both sides. Peebles and Jackson scored tries for the Deputy-captain. Cavanagh placing two goals, while Simpson scored for the Captain. , Mr Jefferson made an efficient referee.

The Dunedin Club's practice match was between teams representing Possibles (Blues) and Probables (Clours). The game, which ended in a victory for the Colours by 11 points to 3, would have been more even had there been fewer players ou the Blues' side. There was eomo very goad passing at times among the backs, but the heeling-out was slow. From a good pass of Best's, M'Kenzie scored for the Colours, and later on Davis also gained a try, but no goals were kicked. Doull made a good attempt to register four points from a maik, bufc only succteded in kicking a poster. Taken all round tbe place-kicking was poor, Mason being tbe only player who euccjedsd in registering a goal. In the eecond spell Sincock obtained a try for the Colours and Olliver for the Blues. M'Kenzia and M'Kersey played well afc three-quarter-back, the latter's kicking being of great use to his side. At half back Best, Connor, and Mason all played well, their passes being quick and clean. Of the forwards Doull, King, Matheson, M'Lean, and Sinimccd were tho pick, working well in the scrummage and following up in the oyen.

The Zipgari-Richmend held a practice match at Montecillo. Sides were chosen on the grouud by Esquilant and M'Farlane, and after a veiy fist and interesting game victory rested with MFarlaLo's team by 19 to 18. There was a decided improvement in fhe play alt round, especially ncticef.blo in the pissing department cf tho game. It is a milter for regret that so mwiy of last year's forwards arc not taking on active part in the affiirs cf the club this year, but with .the inclusion of the new members ifc is believed the club will be quite as strong as ltst season.

A practice match was plajed between the Pirates Third and the High School, which resulted in a win for thei Piratts by a goal (potted by Hay) to nothing. The School, howevtr, had the better of the gm:o. Gregg, Qualter, Hay, Hiroaan, Hislop, Seolon, and Hejoack played well for the Pi.ates; as did Shiud, Cook, Ulrich, Macdonald, Inder, ond Carter for tha Echooi.

At the conclusion of this game tho senior members of the Pirale3 Club played a match Back v. Colour?, which was won by the BLcks by three goals ond one try (13 points) to two goels ar,d one try (13 points) For tte Blacks P. Priest, Kirkcaldy, Hislop, and Macarthur scored, from which Priest kicked two goals and A. Matheson ono Williams, Lumb, and Thomson scored fur the Colours, from which Williams kicked two goals. The followicg also played well: M'Lecd, Johnston, Holmes, Mirams, Shand (Blacks); and Moller, Landels, Wain, Farquharson, and Silmond (Colours). The play waa a great improveraenton that of tho previous Saturday. In some instances the tries scored were the. outcome of come good passing runs. The club haj now engaged a training hall, and if members will only at'end regularly the Pirates Clnb will be a "hard nut" to crack for the premiership.

Tho Warehouse m;n held a practice match at Montecillo between sides chosen by Hutchison and MBeath, and after a fast and exciting game victory rested with the latter's 6ide by 13 points to 9. Tries were scored for the winners by M'Beath (2), Broad (1), and Cook potted a goal; and for the losers tries were scored by Stalker, Sanderson, and Sanderß. A private telegram received oa Saturday night states tbat the Christchurch Ciub defeated Linwood by 26 vote 3to 3, and that Merivale defeated East Christchurch by 28 p jinls to nothing. 7 Association. The firsfc of the tbiee final practice matches of ths Rangers Club was played between sides chosen by the Captain aud Deputy-captain, and after a good even game resulted in a win for the latter by four goals to threo. Tho forwards on the Deputy-captain's side showed very fair combi&ation .Sligo, as centre forward, kept his place well and worked with good jidgmsnt, while tha passing between Calder, J. North, and Duocin was very fair at times, but thrcugh ovcr-eagernfss the latter failed on several occ-sions to walch where the posts wero. Hiilgcndorf nt half played with good dash, aa did Bowie at full. For the Captain's sida Churchill, Adams, acd Fleming were conspicuous among the forwards, and A. North and Reid as halves showed good form. Peters, in goal, H paying in rare style this season, but on Saturday took matters a little easy. Probably nexfc Saturday the flrst eleven wili play tte rest cf the club.

• It was rather a surprise on Saturday for the Prohibits of the Northern Asscciation team to be defeated by the Possib'e3 by Bix goals to five. The forward play on both Bides was very good, the parsing in particular. Very noticoablo among the new membsrs, whoßO play was a success, were M'Donald, Smith, and Elder. On Sharp's side the victory was due chiefly to C. M-Lcod and B. White, the latter being able to ec ire several goals. Do Lisle for the Captain's side was in good form, Bearing nearly all for his side, and it'is evident that, with good passes from wicg men, he is a dangerous centre. Haynes and White also showed improved play, but shooiicg at goal seems the weak point. Oi the backs, Campbell was always about, ond Arneil played a very handy game. The Roslyn played Captain v. Depntycaptain at Bishopscourt, and aftor a very onesided game, resulted in a win for the Captain's Bide by 10 goals to six. The game throughout was fast and exciting. Some splendid defensive play being shown by the defeated side. The Queen's Drive Club played a scratch match, Bides beiDg chosen by Scott and Campbell, the former winning after a fast, exciting game by three goals to one. Good combination -was shown by several players on the winning si'e. The Zealandia Club's practice match waß between tides chosen by the Captain and Deputy-captain, and after a fast and pleasant game the Deputy-captaiu's fide wou by five goals to four.
