FIXES.
An alarm was rung out by the City fire bells about 6 o'clock on Saturday evening but there was fortunately no occasion for tbe services of the Fire Brigade. A young girl, named Mary Burnett, in tbe employment of Mr Robert Allen, the licensee of the Excelsior Hotel, had gone to a press in the top storey of that building in order to get out some bedclothes and had with her a lighted candle, from which a portion of the clothes caught fire. She gave the alarm without delay, and Mr Allan and a few willing hands extinguished the fire by means of a hoae, which is laid on for use in case of emergency. It is estimated that £8 will cover the damage. The stock and furniture in tbe
building, which is owned by Mr Johu Donaldson, are insured in the New Zealand Office for £600.
At 11.20 p.m. on Saturday a four-roomed house, which stood on the Sandhills near Anderson's Bay, was burned down. The build-
ing was very old and dilapidated, and was rented by a Chinaman named Tony You from Mrs W. H. "Cutten, the owner. Tony You left the place at 8 o'clock on Saturday- to go to Dunedin, leaving a flre of wood, over which he put same ashes, burning in the fireplace, and he was on hia way home in the 11 p.m. 'bus when the fire was noticed and pointed out to him. Neither the building nor the Chinaman's effects were insured.
