PORT CHALMERS.

The regular meeting of the Port Chalmers Municipal Council was held yesterday evening. Present—His Worship the Mayor (Mr J. Watson jun.), Crs E. G. Allen, W. Mudge, C. M. laverarity, W. Dawson, A. M'lnnes, W. Pedlow, J. Mitchell, W. Sntton, J. Watson sen., and W. Murray. Mr A. Matheson, tho mayor of Roslyn, was present, and was welcomed by his Worship the, Mayor to a seat in the council. CORRESPONDENCE. From the Public Trustee, who wrote as follows :—" I beg to call your attention to Bubsection 1 section 206 of ' The Municipal Corporations Act 1886,' which requires that the council shall direct the Commissioner of the Sinking Fund in respect of the modes of investment. As no direction has been given by the council in this matter, and it is no doubt their desire that the money should fall into the ' common fund' of the office, I would suggest that a resolution be passed and forwarded to me authorising me to place the money in such ' common fund.' I send you a copy of the act of 1891, and call your attention to sections 10 and 11 thereof having reference to investments." —It was resolved that the matter he referred to the Finance Committee, with power to act. Mr J. M'Lachlan, on behalf of a number of residents in Mausford Town, wrote stating that it was their intention to form a bowling green, and requested the council to lease them a piece of ground near the cemetery for that purpose. —Referred to the Reserves Committee for report. Mr W. J. Waters wrote requesting that a reduction in the rent paid by him for a right-of-way between Grey street and the municipal buildings, largely used by the public, be made. —Referred to Reserves Committee for report. Mr Hinohliff, the returning officer for the Chalmers Licensing District, wrote asking the council to place the sum of £120 to his credit. Mr J. C. Conolly wrote intimating that he intended cutting off the supply of water to two of his baths.—Referred to the Water Committee. EEPOETS. The Finance Committee in its report recommended payment of accounts amounting to £17 8s <Yd. The state of the funds in bank was as follows:—Debit water account, £575 3s 6d ; credit, general account, £24-9 5s 6d ; accounts payable, £17 8s 4d ;—total debit, £343 63 4d. Receipts since last meeting: Water account, £73 3s 9d ; general account, £71153 10d.—The report was adopted as read. The Works Committee reported that since the 9th inst. the inspector and staff had formed and laid an asphalt channel in the lower level of Harrington street, from Bernicia to Daly streets, which will remedy the grievance complained of by tho adjoining property holders. About two chains of footpath on the north side of Fox street have been formed and gravelled. A 6in pipe drain and well have been put in to convey tho storm water from tho Sawyers' Bay road to the storm culvert, to prevent it flowing on to tho Gas Company's premises. Due attention has been paid to cleansing the streets, and the street lamps are in course of repair and being m&dc ready for lighting. The committee also recommended, with a view to remedying the defective state of a portion of Harrington street, that about four chains of a proper chaunel be constructed. — The report was, adopted. __________________t DOLLAR CIGARETTES. He felt sure hat although it would be a very severe strain m their finances it was yet necessary to carry mt the provisions of the act. . Cr Murray failed to seethe necessity of subnitting to the dictates of the Government in his matter. He considered it would b9 b'etts?----;o let the matter pass without any election. His Worship the Mayob read the telegram received by him from the Colonial Secretary ntimsting that* the election of a committee was imperative. It was resolved to place the sum required at the disposal of the returning officer. His Worship the Mayor of Roslyn expressed bis satisfaction at the result of the council's motion, and thanked them for the courtesy extended to him.
