NEWS, GOSSIP, AND ADS.. The Dunedin Cup will be decided to-day. The Mount Bischoff (Tasmania) mine last year produced 2WO tons of tin, and paid £61,500- in dividends. The outlook for 1894 is equally encouraging. Mr R. Brown, a railway guard who has been stationed at Oamaru for eight years, has been transferred to Dunedin, and received a purse of sovereigns from his fellow employees. - Christohurch papers report the death of Mr M'Kenzie, gas engineer to the Christchutcb. Gas Company, leaving a widow and four children. He was tho son of a gas engineer at Dunfennline, Scotland, and was selected on account of his abilities and scientific knowledge in the manufacture of gas. ' The Westport Times states that a writ has been issued against a local medical man for £370, damages for alleged maltreatment. A four-roomed house, together with a washhouse and outbuilding?, was burnt down at Burnsido at 2 30 a.m. yesterday, the cause of the fira being, it is supposed, the bursting of a kerosene lamp. The house belonged to Mrs Annie Pitcairn, and was occupied by a miller named, John Black. Nothing was saved with the exception of a few articles of clothing. Hall, Stuart street, last evening, G.M. Bro. West presiding. There was a fair attendance of members and visiting brothers. One new member was initiated. Permanent Secretary Bro. Gow, of the Loyal Palmerston Lodge, andN.G. Bro.M. Miller, of the Loyal Albion Lodge, responded to the second toast of the evening, Receipts, £30 7s 4d. King Tawhiao paid a visit to Auckland a few days ago, but he has now returned to Huarua, near Waikato Heads. The object of Tawbiao's visit to Auckland was to make inquiry into several land matters. He wants to know something respecting a block of land at Ngaruawahia extending to 1000 acres, which was given in the early days to Bishop Selwyn for church and school purposes. He was also desirous to know particulars as to how Native land at Mangere had been allotted. On these subjects he communicated with Mr. Mueller, the Commissioner of Crown Lauds, and he also wrote to the Hon. Mr Seddon, Native Minister.
