DEATH OF BISHOP HAMPER.

(Feb United Pbess Association.) Christchubch, December 28. The Right Rev. H. J. C. Harper, till recently Bishop of Christchurch and Primate of New Zealand, died to-day, in his ninetieth year. He was ponsecrated bishop in 1856, and on the resignation of Bishop Selwyn in 1869 was elected primate. He resigned both positions in October 1889. ©

The Right Rev. Henry Johu Chifty Harper was the sou of the late Tristram Harper, of Qosport. where he was born in 1807. He-was educated afc Ilydo Abbey School, Winchester, and Queen's College, Oxford, wherehe graduated B.A. in -1826, M.A. in 1840, and was Michel Fellow, boiug made D.D. iv 18SS. He was ordaiued dcaoou by the Bishop of Rochester in 1831, and priost by the Bishop of Lincoln in 1832. From 1828 to 1836 ho was private tutor at Eton, and from 1832 to 1840 was "conduct" (or chaplaiu) of that college.
