The following letter (says the Age) has been received by the Melbourne Progressive Society of Carpenters and Joiners from one of its members, who has lately been trying hia luck in SonthfcAtrica:-»I arrived in Capetown on October 29, after a. boisterous voyage of 25 days It is a small place, with gaunt, i old-fashioned buildings, about 100 years behind Melbourne. There is a little work going on here, butthereare plenty of,men to do it, and hundreds are arriving every week. The wages are from 7s to 10s a ,day.. The accounts from Johannesbarg are very bad, and sfi'ow that men are walking about there almast starving, and the men returning advise us not to go up. there on any account. Bricklayers, plasterers, and carpenters' work is there "done by Kaffirs, who work at a very cheap rate. Everybody here works nine hours a day. I. send these few lines to advise any of our members not to come over here, as the place is very small, and there are a lot of men'walking about looking for work." * . -
