SCHOOL COMMITTEES.

The monthly meeting of the Albany street School Committee was held last evening, and was attended by Messrs Barnett (chairman), Toomey, Fredric, and Shepherd. The head master reported that the number of pupils on the roll was: Boys, 380; girls, 360 ;—total, 740. Accounts were passed for payment amounting to L 6 5s 4d. It was stated that the penny savings bank was re-opened that day, and would be open eveiy Friday between 2.30 and 4 p.m. It was resolved to vote for Messrs I. Green, J. W. Jago, and G. Reid for the vacancies on the Education Board. The balance sheet of the Albany street and Union street Schools' joint concert and picnic was laid on the table, showing a balance in favour of the committee of 3s fid. It was resolved that the secretary be instructed to write to the chairman of the Education Boar.d requesting the board to receive a deputation from the school committee with respect to the gymnasium, and that Messrs Barnett, Fredric, Allen, and Maitland form the deputation. . It was decided to postpone the school swimming tournament for the present. The monthly meeting of the High street School Committee was held last evening and was attended by Messrs H. Mercer (chairman), W. C. Haynes, T. West, W. Hislop, J. Caradus, M." Moss, and J. Hatton. The head master (Mr Smith) reported that the number on the school roll was—Boys, 353; girls, 33b";—total, 689. The average attendance for the first week since the school was opened was —Boys, 329; girls, 317; — total, 64b". At the beginning of the year 58 new pupils entered the school. A letter was received from Mr A. Purdie requesting the committee to appoint a delegate to the Committee of the Public Schools' Swimming Club, and Mr Haynes was appointed delegate. The vote of the committee for candidates for the Education Board was then taken, and resulted in favour of Messrs Ramsay, M'Kerrow, and Reid.
