CITY POLICE COURT.

J-mthrie and Co., on Febmary 1, at Dunedin.— Ihe lads pleaded guilty.—Sergeant-major Bevin informed the bench that complaints had been received in regard to the stealing of a large number of these bottles from Messrs Guthrie's place, and on the previous day Mr Walter Guthrie saw these lads m the very act of taking two or three away—Walter Guthrie and Constable Grey gave evidence.-The step-father of M'Donald stated that the lad was beyond his control, and Mrs James said that her boy was also very bad.— rhe Bench asked her if she would chastise the boy.—Mrs James replied that she would not. She had chastised him before, and it only made him worse.-Sergeant-major Bevin said that James had been before the court on a previous occasion f or stone-throwing, but the police had nothing to say against the other lad.—The Bench ordered that each of the boys receive six strokes with a birch rod.

Bye-law Cases.—For allowing a horse to wander at Caversham, Allan Johnston, who did not appear, was fined ss, without costs. Furious Driving—Henry Gore and Ambrose \\ ard were each charged with furiously driving a cn-ag from St. Clair to town on January 21.—Mr Hanlon appeared for the defendants, who pleaded not guilty.—Sergeant-major Bevin stated that on the day ln question the defendants, who were rival busmen, were at St. Clair. They were each talking about their horses, and they decided that they should have a race in to Dunedin for a wager. Ihey started off, and on the way they both urged their horses at a gallop.—Thomas Dove gave evidence that he was a passenger, for town by Ward s drag. When on the way he advised Ward not to go so fast, and Ward checked his horses.— Lvidence was also given by James Jennings. Charles Burrows, and Constable Dale, in which it appeared that one of the drags nearly collided with another vehicle driven by Mr Jennings.— ior the defence, it was argued that the horses were not galloping at all—in fact they could not have done so, seeing that the drags were each full of passengers—The defendants thengave evidence. Mr Gore stating that he left St. Clair at 3.10 and arrived in town at 3.35, thus taking nearly half an hour, or travelling at the rate of about seven miles an hour.—The defendants were convicted and fined each 10s and costs (9s).—Mr Hanlon asked that an alternative be fixed, as the fine would not be paid.—Mr Logan said there would be no alternative.
