Bannerman and Bruco. brought the score into the third century before the partnership was dissolved. M'Leod, after batting, had to return to Melbourne owing to a family bereavement. Moses, because of the injury to his leg, was unable to bat at the last moment. Consequently the Australian team played only 10 men. . I The innings closed for 391, leaving the Englishmen 230 runs to make to win. Bannerman, whose score amounted to 91, was nearly nine hours at the wickets. Bruce played a dashing innings for 72. M'Leod made 18, Turner (not out) 14-, CaUaway 0, Blackham 0. The Englishmen fielded splendidly. Lohmann secured two wickets for 84 runs, Briggs four for 69 runs, Attewell one for 43 runs, Sharpe one for 91 runs, Peel one for 49 rjins. Grace and Stbddart also bowled, but without success. Heavy showers of rain fell at intervals during the afternoon, interfering with the game. When stumps were drawn for the day Lord Sheffield's Eleven had lost three wickets for 11 runs.
