«. NEWS, GOSSIP, AND ADS. A London cablegram announces the death of Dr Alfred Carpenter. Europe consumes upwards of L6,000,000 worth of gold and silver annually for plate, jewellery, and ornaments. At the Christchurch Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday, "William Scarlett was fined L2O and costs for baring wantonly driven into a mob of sheep on the Eiccarton road. Mr H. O. Stentiford, who will be remembered as the author of the comedy " That Billet-doux,'' recently produced for his benefit, died on Thursday, at the early age of 31 years. Mr Stentiford had been connected as usher with the Princess Theatre for many years. He was the second son of the late Captain Steutiford. The fishing competition for Mr Farquhar's silver cup (says the Balclutha Free Press) brought out some 22 competitors on Monday. The cup was won by Mr W. "Willocks, with 17 fish weighing 47-jlb. Mr J. Willocks was second, Mr James Duckworth third, and Mr G. H. Gilroy fourth. The names of three of the pupils of the Christian Brothers' School, Dunedin, appear in the list of successful eondidates in the recent university examination which we published yesterday. Eugene J. O'Neill passed the medical preliminary, Arthur Joseph Hull qualified for matriculation on the junior scholarship papers, and Charles Joseph Wilkius was successful in passing the ordinary matriculation examination. All the lads are quite young. It has more! than once been the publicly expressed opinion of Mr Henry Irving that, although scenery was practically non-existent in the Elizabethan plays, the properties used wore generally handsome and often positively sumptuous.
