BATHING FATALITY AT THE OCEAN nEACH,

John Donovan, a single man, aged 35 years, was drowned at the Ocean Beach while bathing about 6 o'clock yesterday morning. Deceased, who was foreman at the Ocean Beach tramway stables, was in the habit of bathing every morning in the surf, and yesterday at the time mentioned he entered the water *at that part of the beach directly opposite to the end of the Queen's Drive. He swam outside the breakers, and remained there for a short time. Two large waves were then seen to break over him, and after the ""waters had subsided there was no appearance of the swimmer. Messrs J. and H. Paterson, sons of Mr C. Paterson, of the firm Paterson and Burk, were bathing a little distance away, and saw him in the water. Subsequently missing him, they became alarmed, and gave information to the South Dunedin police. Constable Dale hurried to the spot, and a search was instituted, but no signs of the unfortunate man could be seen. The constable took possession of the deceased's clothes, and Constable Herilhy was placed on duty at the beach to watch for the body being washed ashore. Deceased had been employed at the tramway sheds for the past three years, and had earned a high reputation with his employers and with all with whom he was acquainted by his quiet, steady habits and his genial disposition. Deceased was an expert swimmer, and was in the habit of proceeding outside the breakers. It has been stated, however, that he was subject to cramp, and it is probable he might have been so seized while he was thus bathing. At first it was thought that the man was seriously hurt, and Dr Cunninghame, who was sent for, ordered his removal to the hospital. On his arrival at tho institution, however, it was found that the extent of the injuries were rather severe bruises, and it is now thought that no serious results are likely to ensue,
