THE WORLD'S FAIR. Melbourne, January 29, (Received January 29, at 12.15 p.m.)
The Government have promised to grant 1i15,000 towards the representation of this colony at Chicago if exhibitors will raise LSOOO. They think that there should be only one Australasian court, each colony, however controlling its own exhibits. ■>
THE NEW SOUTH WALES TARIFF. Sydney, January 29. (Received January 29, at 12.15 p.m.) The Assembly made better progress in committee on the Customs tariff, and succeeded in finishing the sections dealing with specific dutiies. The duty on candles was reduced by id per Ib, and raw coffee and cocoa were placed on the free list The duties on cereals were passed by 53 to 27. The committee adjourned at 2 o clock this morning.
THE IMPERIAL INSTITUTE,
Six thousand pounds was placed on the Estimates as an annual grant to the Imperial Institute. l
A BANK FAILURE,
The Sydney Deposit Bank has suspended payment. The manager of the institution attributes the failure to the recent financial crisis.
THE TEKAPO AGROUND.
While leaving Newcastle the Union Steamship Company's Tekapo ran aground on Ston y Point, in making room for another vessel. It is expected she will be floated off uninjured
SABBATH OBSERVANCE,
/ Adelaide, January 29. (Received January 29, at 12.15 p.m.) The working of steamers in port on Sundays is prohibited in every case, with the exception of landing mails.
