THE BURNING OF THE MEROPE.

The ship's cargo was fired spontaneously when near Buenos Ayres. The crew took to the | boats and were rescued. She was bound from Wellington to London. The Merope arrived at Port Chalmers in February last from London, discharged portion jof her cargo here, and in March proceeded to Wellington, where she discharged the remainder of her original cargo. She then took in a cargo | chiefly of wool, flax, and tallow, and sailed for London on April 4. She was barque rigged, and was under tho command of Caprain Thomas. She was registered at Lloyd's as being of 1054 tons. She was strongly constructed, and probably had been on fire somo considerable time before she was discovered by the Bobock. She had a full complement of hands when she sailed from New Zealand. Her cargo comprised 654 bales of wool and skins, 197 casks of tallow, 45 sacks of hides, and 3000 bales of flax.
