WHARF LABOURERS' UNION".

The conference of delegates from the Wharf Labourers' Unions in the colony held its fourthi sittiug in tho New Zealand Ins'irance Company's buildings on Monday, Mr Lj Warne presiding.

Before the regular business on the order" paper was commenced, Mr Cbeaih (Napier) moved, and Mr GnEDME (Gisborne) seconded — " Thafc a letter bo sent to tho Mercantile Marine ■ Officers' Association thanking the officers forthe manly manner iv which thiy acted in. refu-ing to remain'on the s.s. Janet Nicoll, a British registered ship, on board of which non--uuion men were employed."—On ihe motionbeing put to the meeting, it was carried unanimously.

A further suggestion to the effett that theNew Zsaland Wharf Labourers' Drion shouldoffer to pay part of tbe expenses iicurred by the ofiicers of the s.s, Janet Nioo-iwas alsocarried without dissent.

The rules at present in force with the unioc were then taken up for discussion, andnecessary amendments were made in several of tbeuKThese alterations will come before the Maritime Council for approval at its meeting k Welling--ton in May. The delegates have a veiy arduous and important duty to perform in deiling with these rules, which have to be so franed that they wiil agree with those of tho Australian Federation. It is now probable that tie labours of the conference will extend over tire greater part bf the week.

To-day the working rules aro to be ;aken np, and as each port in the colony has of necessity its own working rules, the time of the conference will be occupied for some time with very tedious business.

The fifth sitting of the conference' was held yesterday, and extended from 930 »m. to 4.30 p.m., with an hour's adjournment. All the delegates were present, Mr Lo Warns occupying the chair.

The business of the day was considiration and revision of the rules already laid dtwn for the government of ttie Lnion. These rules, after being dealt with by the confererce, will bo handed over to Messrs Fisher (Wellrugton) and Brown (Lyttelton), the union's delegates to the Maritime Couucii, who will stbmit them to that body for approval. The Maritime Council opens its session in Wellington next Monday.

To-day the conference agaio considers the ■working rules of the union.
