CABMEN'S PROTECTION SOCIETY.

A meeting of cabmen was held in the Pier Hotel* laat night for the purpose of forming a society among: themselves. MrJ. A. Miller, seeretaryof the N.Z. Federated Seamen's Union, vr&s voted to the chair, and in a very lucid address explained the stepa he thought ib advisable the cabmen should take to secure the objecb they had in view. He also gave a few worda of advice as Lo the course to be pursued after that object had been gained. Mr Miller's remark* were very much to tbe point, and were heartily appreciated by hia auditors. It waa aftcrwarda proposed and eeconded, and carried unanimously, that & society among cabmen should be formed, to be called

" The Duuediu Cabmen's Protection Society"; and; it was further agreed to adopt the rules aud regulations of a similar body tbat existed in this city some years ago, but which was allowed to drop out of existence for some reason or other.

The following officers were tben eleoted:—President. Mr Henry Harding; vice-president, Mr John Lawless; secretary, Mr Wm. George; treasurer, Mr Michael Keys; committee—Messrs John Gibbs, David Taylor, J. Collins, J. Goodmanson, _'m. Ackland, and Wm. Burns.

The objects of the society are to afford members individually, by the help of united fuuds, the means of protecting themselves; to join the members ior mutual help and protection in cases of accident or otherwise; to protect the cabmeu and other members of the society iv every reasonable way; and by all legitimate means to raise tbem socially and morally; and for all or any such purposes to engage professional help and obtain advice. Tbo entrance fee is ss. aud the contribution is k6 tho rate of ls per week. The society inteuds to hold weekly meetings.. Ifc is expected tbafc about 60 cabmen, including hansom cabmen and carriage drivers, will join the Bociety.
