IMPORTS AND EXPORTS.
In the December quarter of last year the total value of imports to the colony was £1,670,610. In tbe corresponding quarter of tbe previous year it was £1,493,957. Auckland's imports show a decrease from £311,232 in the 188S quarter to £293,201 in the 1889 period. Wellington increased from £253,707 to £330,906, aud Lyttelton from £306,479 to £421,158, while Dunedin fell from £438,223 to £425,027. The total exports of last quarter realised a value of £2,409,606, as compared with £2,055,328 in the last quarter of the previous year. Auckland's exports fell from £345,385 to £280,284, Wellington's from £354,916 to £347,296, Lyttelton's from £460,774 to £411,565, and Dunedin's increased from £175,947 to £258,169. The total imports for the year 1889 amounted to £6,297,097, as compared with £5,941,900 in the year 18S8. Auckland's imports decreased from £1.403,664 in 1888 to £1,363,131 in 1889, while Wellington's increased from £1,047,302 to £1,161,980, Lyttelton's from £1,217,811 to £1,268,656, aud Dunedin's from £1,563,809 to £1,756,092. The total value of exports during 1889 was £9,339,265, as compared with £7,767,325 iv 1888. Auckland's exports increased from £933,958 to £1,042,087, Wellington's from £1,209,359 to £1,388,922, and Dunedin's from £1,043,208 to £1,210,397. The exports from Lyttelton fell from £2,063,111 to £2,021,225.
The following are the vital statistics for the Dunedin district for the month of January :— Births, 135; deaths, 49; marriages, 29. For the corresponding month of 1889 the returns were :—Births, 120; deaths, 40; marriages, 49.
