TO-DAY'S RACES.

The nninitil race mooting of tho Dunedin Jockey Club cotumeucus to-r)ay, tho first race starting at 12 30. If no more rain falls tho course should be in good order for galloping, tho late showers having done it a power of good. Proceedings will commence with tho Hurdle Race, which promises to bo hotly contested, as between Torrent, Garibaldi, Triraolite, Mammoc, Royalty, and Waitangi. Even should no others start, the race between theao ought to bo worth seeing. My judgment says that Torrent ought to win ; but to bo candid I do not know anything about his present form, and I must, therefore, fall back on the best among those I do know something about, which I take to be Garibaldi and Royalty. I think that Pygmalion will win tho Champagne, notwithstanding his XOlb penalty. If ho is beaten it will probably be by Town Moor, though wo cannot be nuito cortain that this colt is better than Freedom. A week ago I thought the Cup was pretty well all over, but now that the day has come I am not so confident. St. Jamen has in fact brightened up considerably, and with White up may bo oxpected to run a good horse. Ixion, too must bo reckoned ;with. He is, I think, to be preferred to Don Caaar. All things considered I shall go for Occident, but I am prutty sure it will bo a capital race between him and St James. I fancy that Occident is the more reliable of the two. Odcident will be ridden by M'Donald, St. James by White, Ixiou by Wisby, and Don Owsar by Tommy Buddicombe, who will have to put up 21b or 3ib overweight. The Sellling Race will probably be a match between Quibble and Windsor. As to tho Publicans', I still fancy Merrie England, and shall not desert him, but he is not a moral, and it would not surprise me to see Wolverine, Apres Moi, and Goodman's best all in it. Apres Moi is, I think, the most dangerous of the last-mentioned batch, lhe Maiden Plato is another puzzler, as Investigator, Golden Hope, Helmsman, Milord, and Lady Bell are all possibles I think that Investigator and Golden Hope are about the best of the bunch, and as between these two I select Golden Hope, as the other fellow may be reserved for the Stewards' Purse. Lady Bell is a nice mare, but I have my doubts as to whether she will last tho mile and a-quarter. I like tho look of Freedom so much that I shall take him to beat Tempest in the Two-year-old Selling Race. In the Stewards' \\ elter tho most likely members are La Rose Dispute, Road Metal, and Leinster. To take one for each event, my selections are as follow:— Hurdle Race—Royalty. Champagne Stakes—Pygmalion. Dunediu Cup—Occident. Selling Race—Quiuule. Publicans'—Merrie Enoland. Maiden Plate—Golden Hope. Selling Two-year-old—Freedom. Stewards' Purse—Road Metal. Mazeppa. champagne stakes. The weather was fine, but the day dull. The home team went in first, and made 89 in a two hours' innings. N<;w South Wales responded with 75 only, and on Timaru going in for a second time they only made 55. New South Wales requiring 70 to win got them easily \yitb the loss of only one wicket, therefore winning the match by nine wickets.
