COAL PROSPECTS AT NENTHORN. TO THE EDITOR.

Sir, —I see your special has made a limited reference to our success in obtaining coal here. Had he made some inquiries he could have been furnished with some details as to the success of some of the parties that are prospecting. However, if not trespassing too much upon your space, I will give you a few particulars in a rough'way. In the first'place, the seam of lignite on Moonlight Flat is of little value unless they can strike something better than what at present is known to exist there. I have spoken to some of the old residents here who have used it, and they told me it was not worth the trouble of carting. There is a party prospecting between the Upper Stonebum and Scratchback, a distance of some seven or eight miles from the township, or about the same distance as Moonlight Flat. This party have sunk a shaft come 60ft, but have not struck any coal yet, and experts differ as to whether they will strike coal at any depth. A third party has applied for 80 acres adjoining the coal reserve on Scratchback. This party have been prospecting their lease for the last fortnight with very fair success. It first showed itself in a small slip on the side of the road leading from Waikouaiti to Nenthorn, and about 10 miles from the latter placo. After clearing the slip away they found a seam about 2in-thick, and after driving some 7ft or Bft this widened out to about 2fr, from which they took a good sample of lignite—in fact, it resembles brown coal more than lignite. Some of it that I saw burnt in a stove burce 1 capitally and throws off a fine flame. Moat of those who have seen it ;uelieve that it will do well for fcteani purposes, us it must be considerably better where the seam widens out. At present they, are sinking ashaft further up the hill, which • will answer as an air Bhaft as well as testing the thickness of the seam. I have been over all this ground, and should say this party has a good thing, aud at present are only wailing the opening of a passable road, which the County Council are at present engaged upon, and expect to bo through by the end of the month. There is another party prospecting in the direction of Three o'clock, but with what success I have not been able to aecertain. However, I should say that those who have got the coal have tho advantage, and it will scarcely pay another party to go to any great expense.unless the coal should be much superior or nearer.— I run, &c., September 10.
