(Received September 9, at 1.30 p.m.) The following items of Eastern News are to hand per British India Company's steamer:— It is reported that slavery in the cruellest form has been permitted by the Rajah of the Island of Lowbeck, and horrible barbarities are said to have been committed by the Arabs on runaway slaves. Twenty-four members of Chinese secret societies have been arrested. Six were sentenced to death, II to be flogged, and in the remaining cases sentence has not been passed. Operations against the rebels in Tonquin are progressing steadily and successfully In a recent conflict the French troops killed 18 of the rebels.
