Competition at the auction sales on Monday was spirited; prices wero within ld to l£d per lb of those lately obtained. This decline is caused by a rumour that large stocks arc held in London by speculators who may Hood the market at any moment; but by the 11. M. S. Kaikoura tliere are advices from Loudon, dated May 21, confirming reports by cablegram received here about that date of a strong demand experienced at an average advance of 3d per lb on previous rates. Also, adding that stocks were not adequate to meet current trade requirements. The same mail brought advices of sales ot prime winter skins up to 2s (3;d per Ib in London.
