PENSIONS TO THE CIVIL SERVICE. TO THE EDITOR.
Sib,—We have been informed time after time that pensions to civil servants were entirely discontinued. How is it, then, we have lately seen that Mr Seed, of the Customs, retires on a pension of £666 odd a year; and that this officer has been drawing the enormous salary of £1000 a year, and could put by nothing for old age ? No wonder the colony is in its present fix—l am, &c, July 19. °- B' | [Our correspondent is on the wrong track here. Although pensions have long been discontinued, the colony is of course bound to pay them to those who entered the civil service under the pension system. We may add that every public man of both parties will agree that Mr Seed's services were well worth £1000 a, year to this colony. An abler or more industrious public servant New Zealand has never had.—Ed. 0. D. TJ
