Tauhanua, July 20. The daughter of Canon Johnson, recently burned hy her clothes catching fire, died yesterday.

Wellington, July 20. In the Otaki Magistrate's Court Alexander Small, chairman of the Horowhenua County Council, was charged, on the information of James R. Wallace, with having committed a breach of the Local Bodies' Loans Act by making a false statement as to tbe number of votes polled for and against a proposed loan. The defence to the charge was that defendant had struck out from the number of votes exercisable at the poll the nannn of dead persons and trustees of the Wellington-Manawatu Railway Company, whom ho considered were not entitled under tho statute to vote. The magistrate dismissed the case.

Greymouth, July 20. The Midland railway contractors have taken over Corcoran's contract, which will be completed by themselves. It was not being proceeded with fast enough to satisfy them. The road traffic between Brunnerton and up to the Junction and Twelve-mile is something abnormal, and beyond all previous experience It is caused by the carriage of railway material and stores for tbe enormous number of men employed at and above the junction of both branches.

A great deal of cement has been landed lately for Mr Brown and the Midland railway contractors, and the Rosamond brings 615 barrels from Lyttelton for the latter.

There was a great educational row here some time ago over the school inspector's report, which reflected upon the head teacher. The sshool committee resolved to give him and the whole staff three months' notice. The Education Board endorsed the action of the school committee, and refused leave to refer the report of the inspector and all the papers and facts of the case to the Inspector-general. The Otago Educational Institute took the matter up, and eventually it was brought under the notice of the Miuister of Education by the New ZeaUnd Institute To-day a telegram was received in town from the secretary of that body stating that the Minister for Education says " that the inspector made demands not justified by the syllabus." A great deal of local feeling had been aroused over this matter.

Chmstchurch, July 20. Dr M'Kenzie Gordon, of Rangiora, died suddenly at 9 o'clock to-day. He was in fairly good health yesterday, and appeared to his man to be as well as usual during the night, but on the latter returning from his breakfast he found the doctor quite dead. Deceased was much respected, and was captain of the volunteer company and rifle club, president of the horticultural and debating societies, and a member of the borough council. The rainfall for 24 hours to 9 a.m. to-day was 3.48 in. The weather is now showing signs of clearing. The Avon rose about 3ft, and flooded the roads in the north-east part of the town. No houses were entered by the water. The streets in the south of the town are flooded, but no damage has been done except to gardens. Nothing serious is reported from the country, and the railways are all right.

Timaru, July 20. The schoolhouse in Winchester, 16 miles north of Timaru, was burned down at 12 o'clock last night. Tho origin of the fire is unknown.

A grand banquet tendered to the mayor (Mr Moss Jonas) in recognition of his services in connection with the jubilee celebration, held last night, was largely attended. Mr Dawson, rector of the High School, presided. The affair was a complete success.
