FOOTBALL.

Tho match Montecillo Second v. ZingariRichmond Second, at Montecillo, ended somewhat uiiHiitisfactorily, tlio Hcoro being a try to :i disputed try. The play was not of a very high order, tho game being confined to tho forwards. Soon after kick oil' a Montecillo three-quarter madu a (hie run, and though collared outside tlit! line managed to roll over and grouud tho

ball. Tho place was a failure, and the Colours kicked out, and warming up, made things very lively for their opponents. Several force downs and si maid occurred, and then Ilenney, breaking through with the ball at his toe, got over and touched down. The Montecillo umpire, howover, held that the ball was not touched dead, and the referee refusing to express an opinion, the kick at goal was allowed under protest. Kallingshaw's attempt, however, resulted in a poster, and half-time jwas called. With chance of goals play became more even, and towards the end considerably in the Montecillo's favour, the Colours being evidently out of form. No further score was obtained, and the result remains unsettled. It is to be hoped, however, that the two clubs will see their way to settle the point without troubling the O.R.F.U. For Montecillo, Morley, Wells, Bolton, Donovan, Aitken, and Beck did good service; while for the Colours M'Arthur, M'Dougall, Heunoy, M'Farlauo, Grey, and particularly Rallingshaw played well.

" Footballer " writes :—Tho match Taieri Second v. University mixed First and Second was played at Tahuna Park, and resulted in a victory for the former by 1 goal and 1 try (4 points) to 1 goal (3 points). For the Taieri Inglis and J. Harraway got a try each, and from his own try Inglis kicked a magnificent goal. Polsonsecured the try for the 'Varsity, from which Crawford kicked a goal. The 'Varsity were forced down seven times and tho Taieri not once. Great dissatisfaction was expressed owing to the umpires (both Unirereity men) showing what was alleged to be partiality towards the 'Varsity. Thin team got another try, which was disputed by the Taieri on the ground that a dead ball was picked out of tho scrummage. The umpires not

agreeing, and there being no referee, a dispute occurred, which ultimately resulted in the Taieri leaving the field and claiming the match. Tho Taieri are perfectly willing to play the match over again on some neutral ground to decide which is the better team.

The match Gordon v. Pacific ended in a win for the Pacific by 5 points (1 goal and 2 trios) to nil. Tho Pacific had the best of the game throughout, the Gordon only being two or three times in their opponents' twenty-five. The special feature of the game was the really good passing of the winning team. Johnston, Prebble, and M'Cutcheon secured the tries, one of which Watson turned into a goal. The collaring of the losers was very good indeed, and their backs made some very good dodgy runs. Tho match Belmont v. The match Port Pioneers v. North-East Valley was played at Sawyers' Bay, and resulted in an easy win for the Valley by 9 points (two goal and three tries) to nil. The Pioneers played a losing game very pluckily; The Montrose First played the Fitzroy First and defeated them by one try and two disputed tries to nil. The Fitzroy were strengthened by half-a-dozen Ranger's First. The forwards of the Montrose played a capital game, particularly Jones and Foster; as did M'Glashan and Laing for the backs. For the Fitzroy Gillies, Harming, Hunter, and Williamson played well. The Montrose Second defeated the Alpine First by a goal and three tries to one try. The tries for the Montrose were obtained by Lvine (2), Walker (1), Holland (1); while, Costello kicked the goal;

At the last meeting of the Canterbury Rugby Union considerable discussion ensued on the question |of " professionalism," and in view of the union having adopted the rules laid down by the Home Union, it was decided to obtain an assurance from the Auckland Union that professionals would not be played by them in the forthcoming interprovincial match with Canterbury province. The Rev. J. Hoatson tabled the following notice of motion for next meeting :— " That it be Jan instruction of this union to its delegate to the English Rugby Union to propose the following amendments at the next meeting of the Rugby Union:—That in law 44, 1 provided the kicker has not taken his kick, and then only,' be omitted; that in law 45 the following sentence be inserted after the words 'retire to his mark: — In case of a place-kick, if the opposite side charge before the ball touch the ground, the referee may, on a claim by the kicker s side, disallow the charge even thoagh the kick has been actually taken.'"
