THE MAYORAL ELECTION.
to the editor. Sin, —It gives me great surprise to find two such influential members of Mr Leary's committee as Cr Figh and Mr B. Isaac promulgating in your paper an untruth. In the first place I fully corroborate the letter by "A Hearer," having been present myself at Mr Carroll's meeting, and that gentleman did not say what; Mr B. Isaac accused him of. Had Mr Carroll been desirous of blowing his own trumpet he could have said much more in his own favour, for the facts of the case are as follow:—The members of the Finance Committee that year wero Crs Fish, Isaac, Woodland, and Carroll; but thinking Mr Reeves might have soma influence in the negotiation with the Bank of New Zealand, bis name was verbally added to the Finauce Committee. This can be verified by Mr Isaac referring to the minutes of the proceedings, which prove the untruthfulness of Mr Fish's statement that Mr Carroll was not a member of the Finance Committee at that time. •And/further, I would beg to call to his memory the disapproval expressed at their action by the. other members of the Finance Committee for presuming to go to the Bauk of New Zealand without being authorised. But, Sir, I think it speaks well for Cr Carroll's services to the citizens in the City Council when two such bitter opponents have to state untruths to try to fabricate a charge against him. It is well known that Cr Fish is very energetic, and so makes either a determined opponent or a good friend, as was ovinced by his liberality in forwarding to Mr Leary's committee a cheque for two guineas, with many good suggestions for their guidance iv securing that gentleman's election.—l am, &c., William Woodland. Hanover stroet, November 13.
