CITY POLICE COURT.

Fkidat, August 27.

(Before Messrs G. P. Farquhar, A. Dymock,

and R. Chisholm, J.P's.) Drunkenness.—One person was punished for this offence.

Breach op the PEACE.-John Seal was charged with behaving iv a manner calculated to provoke a breach of the peace.—From the evidence for the prosecution it appeared that the accused, with some other lads, threw some snowballs at A. S, Levy while he was passing them at the corner of St. Andrew and Hanover streets —The evidence for the defence went to show that the accused had nothing whatever to do with the offence.—The bench dismissed the case, remarking that if it had been proved they would have inflicted a heavy penalty. Assault.—James Fox was charged with assaulting William Mahoney on the 21st inst.— Mr D. M. Stuart appeared for the complainant, and Mr D. D. Maedonald for the accused.— From the evideuce it appeared that the accused called upon the complainant at the Baldwin Hotel with reference to a paragraph which appeared in the Vanity Fair newspaper, and which the accused believed referred to him. The interview did not prove satisfactory to the accused, who demanded to know who wrote tho paragraph in question. The information required was not given; and the accused* deeming that the complainant, as editor of the paper, was responsible for the paragraph appearing, took the law into his own hands and struck tho accused several times,—After hearing the evidence, the bench convicted the accused, and ordered him to come up for sentence when called upon.
