MONETARY AND COMMERCIAL. Consols remain at 100j|. In Now Zealand securities and breadstuiTs there is no alteration.

The directors of the Bank of England have increased the rate of discount by 1 por cent. The market rate remains at 2;J per cent., or | per,cent, below tlie bank rate. The weekly returns of the Bank of England published to-day show the total reserve in notes and bullion to bo £12,200,000, ov £100,000 loss than last week. The proportion of reserve to [liabilities remains at <Mper cent. THE NEW HEBRIDES. It is stated that the Hon. Mr Stanhope, Secretary of State for the Colonies, has arranged lo confer with Earl Iddesleigh, Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, with regard to the French occupation of the New Hebrides, and to arrange the course of action to be taken in dealing- with tho subject.

THE MELBOURNE SEE.

It is expected the Rev. Mr Austen, of Whitby, will succeed Bishop Moorhouse as Bishop of Melbourne.
