JEWISH PHILANTHROPIC SOCIETY.

The annual general meeting of the members of the Jewish Philanthropic Society of Otago was held at the Synagogue Chambers on May 2 Mr 11. Naphtali, treasurer (in the absence of the president), presided. The minutes of the previous general meeting were read and confirmed.

Ihe Trkasubbr read the balance sheet, the principal items of which are mentioned in the committee's report. The balance sheet was adopted.

The committee's report, as follows, was then read:—

To the Members of the Jewish Philanthropic Society

ot Otago Ladies and Gentlemen,—ln presenting tliis the fourteenth annual report, I have to thank you on behalf ot the committee for subscriptions and offerings during the year, whereby the executive have been enabled to render assistance to 12 applicants amongst whom the large amount of £11 was disbursed. This is just double Hie amount that was given during the preceding year ending May ISBS. your executive regret that only £26 was received in subscriptions; but this is mainly owing to the reason that some of our leading Jewish brethren are not subscribers to the society. Your committee would refer to tne fact that the sum of £U has been returned to the treasurer out of relief voted this year, which tends to show that thoseapplieants who have received assistance have been judiciously reliced by the committee. It would beimpossible'in a society like the Philantln opic to give relief in all cases without there being some imposition, and your members of committee have at all times made earnest inquiries before relieving any cases in which there has been the slightest doubt as to the honesty of the applicant. The assets at the beginning of the year amounted to £120 12s Sd; and the treascin-r's balance sheet, duly audited, shows a decrease of £2 3s, assets beiiifrafc the present time £115.9s ocl. The number of members on the roll at present is 36, as against 3-1 last year, being an increase of two. Ihe Synagogue trustees are still indebted to the society to the amount of £100, which is lent at 6 per cent. The president (Mr Charles S. Jacob) havin» some short time since left for England, the office of president was vac ti ed ; but your committee decided that being so near the general election the management should be left iv the hands of the treasurer. In conclusion, your committee would urge ali those ladies and gentlemen of our faith who are not members to join the society, and thus by their assistance help the incoming committee to" relieve the wants of their poorer but worthy brethren. H. Naphtam, chairman. On the motion of the Chairman the report was unanimously adopted. Ou tbe motion of Mr Hallenstein, seconded by Mr P. Isaacs, it was unanimously carried— " That a hearty vote of thanks be accorded to the retiring president (Mr 0. S. Jacob) and the other officers of the executive."

Mr Naphtali apologised for the absence of the president, who was in England. The election of officers for the ensuing year was then taken, with the following result:— President, Mr Godfrey Jacobs; treasurer, Mr H. Naphtali (re-elected); hon. secretary, Mr Leopold E. Isaacs. A ballot; was then taken, eight gentlemen being nominated and the following committee of five chosen —Messrs R. M. Marks, M. Joel, B. Hallenstein, D. E. Theomin, M. P. Isaacs, and Rev.,B.
